On 3 October 2020, SENATURK started a postgraduate virtual education programme on breast surgery for general surgery residents currently under training in Turkey as a joint project with Turkish Surgical Society. The programme will cover sessions about various aspects of breast health including benign and malignant diseases as well as their surgical and non-surgical management issues. The education will be given by eminent faculty members consisted of breast and reconstructive surgeons, radiologists, pathologists, medical and radiation oncologists, physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians, geneticists and nuclear medicine physicians. The programme will be held every other week on Saturday mornings with 90-minute sessions for each setting. Total number of training sessions will be 17 weeks and will be completed at mid June 2021. The programme is free-of-charge for the year 3, 4 and 5 general surgery residents who are under training in Turkey.
Due to the COVID-19 outbreak related interruptions at its regular in-person educational meetings, SENATURK started to organize regular webinars about breast cancer management in May 2020 under the name “CONNECT SENATURK”.
On 16 May 2020, Prof. Andreas Karakatsanis from Sweden and Prof. Sevilay Altintas from Belgium attended the webinar about “Ductal Carcinoma In Situ” as the guest speakers.
On 30 May 2020, Prof. Sarkis Meterissian and Prof. Jean-Francois Boileau from Canada attended the webinar about “Surgery after Neoadjuvant Systemic Treatment” as the guest speakers.
On 13 June 2020, Prof. Murray Brunt was the guest speaker at the webinar about his recent “Fast Forward Radiotherapy" trial. Also Prof. Philip Poortmans from Belgium joined the discussion as the co-moderator of the webinar.

Breastanbul 2020 Virtual was held online on 17-18 October 2020. More than 700 participants from over 40 countries logged-in during 2-day conference which was run at 3 parallel channels. More than 50 international faculty joined the conference as speaker, moderator or panelist. Nearly 80% of the program was aired live by real-time talks and panel discussions.
SENATURK president Prof. Bahadir M. Gulluoglu has become a member of ASCO (American Society of Clinical Oncology) Resource-Stratified Guideline Advisory Group in 2020.
IREBS 2020 was held as an online event both in Turkish and English at two separate weekends on 19-20 September and 26-27 September 2020. In the first weekend, 63 participants from 16 countries including Malaysia, Thailand, Australia, UK, Ireland, Serbia, India, Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Jordan, Egypt, Poland, Ukraine, Bangladesh and Iran attended the workshop. In the second weekend, 59 participants from Turkey took the workshop. At the end of the event, those participants who passed the post-workshop exam received their Certificates of Achivement during online ceremony. Halyna Nazarko from Ukraine, Paul Ionescu and Adela-Luciana Oprea from Romania, Dionysios Dimas from Greece, Ghaith Heilat from Jordan and Cetin Bilge Kagan Tumer and Mehmet Okan Kayhan from Turkey got the highest scores therefore received Distinction awards.
SENATURK representing Turkey has joined Central and Eastern European Association of Oncology (CEEAO) as one of the stakeholders and founding members. Profs. Bahadir M. Gulluoglu, Erkin Aribal and Atakan Sezer attended the inaugural ceremony held on 24th January 2020 in Budapest, Hungary with the participation of 16 member country members and Hungarian secretaries of state, health and development and Serbian Ministry of Health. Prof. Zoltan Matrai was elected as the founding president of CEEAO. Also following the ceremony, on 25th January 2020 Central and Eastern European Breast Cancer Surgical Consortium (CEEBCSC) held its regular meeting and SENATURK delegates made presentations about SENATURK’s prospect collaboration projects in the consortium. All parties unanimously agreed that SENATURK is welcome to have a crucial role in future missions of CEEBCSC and CEEAO.
SENATURK made an agreement with MedStar Hospital in Kishinev, Moldova to give full consultation, training and mentorship for establishing the country’s first comprehensive breast cancer center. Prof. Gulluoglu and Dr. Cem Yilmaz visited MedStar Hospital in 2-4th March 2020 and initiated the agreement by writing the authentic blueprint and essential prime SOPs after meeting with all related parties.
BRESO (European Breast Surgical Oncology Certification) Structure Working Group in which SENATURK is represented by Prof. Gulluoglu recently released its curriculum “Theoretical and practical knowledge curriculum for European Breast Surgeons” as a position paper published in European Journal of Surgical Oncology. Breast Gynecological International Cancer Conference was held in Cairo, Egypt on 17-18 January 2019. SENATURK executive comittee members Prof Bahadir M. Gulluoglu and Dr. Cem Yilmaz were among its guest faculty. Another SENATURK faculty member Prof. Omar Z. Youssef was the scientific coordinator of the surgery chapter of the conference. During the final day of the conference both Prof Gulluoglu and Dr. Yilmaz participated consensus session on “Multidisciplinary Management of Axilla in Breast Cancer” as panelists. A SENATURK faculty member Prof. Michael Douek moderated this special session. More than 2000 participants attended this largest breast cancer meeting of Africa and Middle-East.
SENATURK president Prof. Bahadir M. Gulluoglu participated the 16th St. Gallen International Breast Cancer Conference held in Wien, Austria during 20-23 March 2019 as guest speaker and consensus panelist. During the Conference, Prof. Gulluoglu gave a talk on “Impact of older age on local treatment decisions” during the surgical treatment session.
SENATURK executive committee members Profs. Bahadir M. Gulluoglu, N. Zafer Canturk, Atakan Sezer and S. Ata Guler participated as core faculty members in 7th International Breast Cancer Conference organized in Bucharest, Romania by the Romanian Society of Breast Surgery and Oncology between 6-8 June 2019. SENATURK was one of the official partners of this annual conference. Prof. Alexandru Blidaru who is the faculty member of SENATURK chaired the Conference. Also, other eminent SENATURK faculty members Profs. Mahdi Rezai and Stefan Voiculescu attended the event as guest speakers.
SENATURK’s Breast Ultrasonography (SENUS) Course was held on 25-26 May 2019 in Istanbul Bahcelievler Memorial Hospital. During this 2-day course, experienced faculty members (breast surgeons) conveyed their knowledge and experience to participants on both diagnostic and interventional aspects of breast ultrasonography. Apart from lectures, hands-on training on live patients and phantom models were given during modules in which only 5-6 participants are allowed. Totally 20 surgeons received the “SENUS Achievement Certification” as a part of SENATURK Breast Mastership Programme after they successfully passed the post-training exam.
Prof. Bahadir M. Gulluoglu, president of SENATURK, moderated the consensus session on “Surgical Treatment of Young Breast Cancer Patients” as one of the moderators along with Prof. Gauraw Agarval from India and Prof. Sarkis Meterissian from Canada during World Congress of Surgery held in Krakow, Poland in 11-13 August 2019. During this special session 15 different aspects of the surgical management of patients which are not supported by high-level evidence were discussed and voted by the opinion leaders present in the audience.
Prof. Burcu Celet Ozden who is the faculty member of SENATURK at Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Department succesfully passed both the written and oral exams of European Board of Surgery Qualification (EBSQ) and received the European Board of Surgery, Division of Breast Surgery Certification on 29 September 2019 in Bucharest, Romania. Prof. Ozden is the first Plastic & Reconstructive surgeon from Turkey who received this certification.
SENATURK-Hellenic Society of Breast Surgeons (EXEM) Joint Round Table was held during 7th Annual Congress of Hellenic Society of Breast Surgeons in 1-3 November 2019 in Athens, Greece. Prof. Bahadir M. Gulluoglu and Dr. Basil Venizelos, as presidents of both parties, moderated this special session with the participation of Prof. Ilias Athanasiadis, Dr. Athanasios Dimopoulos and Dr. Kalliopi Varaki as panelists. During the session different cases and related issues were discussed with the audience’s active participation. Both parties showed their strong willingness to work on mutual interests and plan new joint meetings for further collaboration. SENATURK very much appreciated EXEM’s kind invitation and all of its Greek colleagues’ warm hospitality during their stay in Athens.
SENATURK organized a joint workshop with Marmara University Hospital and MAYMET on “Skin-Sparing Mastectomy” on 23 November 2019 in Marmara University Hospital, Istanbul. 29 faculty members from breast surgery, plastic & reconstructive surgery, radiology and radiation oncology units from 14 different institutions gave lectures or sit at panels to elaborate and discuss different aspects of skin-sparing and nipple-areola-sparing mastectomy for risk-reducing or therapeutic purposes. More than 120 physicians, nurses and technicians attended this one-day event from different cities and institutions of Turkey.
SENATURK president Prof. Bahadir M. Gulluoglu participated as one of the guest speakers in Milan Oncoplastic Meeting (MBN2019) on 11-14 December 2019 in Milan, Italy. During the conference, apart from his talk and chairmanship at “Neoadjuvant Treatment” session, he attended “the BRESO Project” session as one of the panelists. In this special session, as panelists, general and plastic & reconstructive surgeons discussed the emerging BRESO (“European” Breast Surgical Oncology) Fellowship/Training Programme with all dimensions. Prof. Gulluoglu sat at the panel due his Theoretical Knowledge Working Group membership in the BRESO Project since 2018.
Prof. Gulluoglu, SENATURK president, was elected as “Deputy Secretary” at UEMS European Board of Surgery, Breast Surgery Division for 2019-2021 term. He will run this new post along with his current post as “Webmaster” at Executive Committee of the Board.
Istanbul Reconstructive Breast Surgery (IREBS) Workshop 2019 was held in 21-22 September 2019 at Marmara University School of Medicine, Istanbul, Turkey. During this SENATURK skills workshop, 18 certified and experienced tutors/surgeons gave tutorials and hands-on training. Live as well as synthetic breast models were used for demonstrations and individual training. In addition, MDT panels were moderated on different clinical cases with the participation of 10 guest faculty from pathology, radiology, medical and radiation oncology. 38 trainees from 14 countries including Egypt, Greece, Romania, Moldova, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, South Africa, Malaysia, Iran, Iraq, Switzerland, and Azerbaijan successfully completed the training and certified with SENATURK Achievement degree.
6th International Conference of Romanian Society of Breast Oncology and Surgery was held in 1-3 November 2018 in Bucharest. As it was for the last 5 years in a row, SENATURK was one of the main scientific partners of this prestigious conference in which more than 500 participants registered. SENATURK president Prof. Bahadir Gulluoglu, vice-president Prof. N Zafer Cantürk and Chief Operating Officer Assist Prof S Ata Guler gave lectures and conferences during the conference as well.
3rd International Istanbul Breast Cancer Conference was held on 11-13 October 2018 in Istanbul. This year, totally 710 participants from 58 different nations attended the conference in which more than 50 international faculties took a role in lectures and panels. The best oral paper award was given to Dr. Semra Günay and her colleagues from Istanbul and the best poster award was given to Dr. Han and his colleagues from Seul, South Korea.
Breastanbul, International Istanbul Breast Cancer Conference, was held in 10-12 November 2016 with more than 700 participants from 25 countries. Event started with courses on breast surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery, breast imaging and pathology. A commemoration for Prof. Umberto Veronesi who has passed away very recently was done by Dr. George Asimakopoulos at the official opening. Scientific programme run in three parallel halls in which more than 100 speakers and panelists from 17 countries took part in it. At closing ceremony, awards for best oral and poster papers were given to Dr. Selcuk Seber from Turkey and Dr. Wlliam Evans from the UK, respectively. The conference is followed by a pop concert attended by a crowd of delegates and invited patients along with their friends and relatives.
TURKIREBS Istanbul Breast Cancer Reconstructive Surgery Workshop was held during 4 and 5 June 2016 in Istanbul. Marmara University School of Medicine hosted the event in which 54 trainees attended this 2-day training workshop. Totally 17 faculty members from General Surgery, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery and Surgical Anatomy Departments from 12 different institutions took part in this hands-on postgraduate education programme. Attendants spent their time in 6 different modules in which they were coached to perform 14 different oncoplastic breast surgery techniques on live and foam models as well as fresh frozen cadavers. Those who passed the final exam received the official certification acknowledged by SENATURK and European Academy of Senology.
SENATURK faculty member Prof. Omar Z. Youssef has been elected as president-elect in Breast Surgery International (BSI). BSI will be organizing the Mastery of Breast Surgery Course during Breastanbul on 10 November 2016 in Istanbul.
SENATURK President Professor Bahadır M. Gulluoglu and First Vice President Professor Nuh Zafer Canturk were invited to 3rd International Symposium of Romanian Society of Breast Surgery and Oncology in Bucharest between 8-10 October 2015 as guest faculty. Professor Gulluoglu emphazied the significance of professionalism in breast surgery during his official opening talk. The congress president Professor Alexandru Blidaru who is also a SENATURK faculty member said the collaboration between Romania and Turkey is very fruitful by means of experience exchange. Turkish Ambassador in Romania his excellency Mr. Koray Ertaş also addressed the audience at the official opening of the congress emphasizing the significance of increasing scientific and health sector partnership between two countries. During the symposium along with Profs. Gulluoglu, Canturk and Blidaru, SENATURK faculty member from Cairo, Egypt Professor Omar Z. Youssef gave lectures on breast cancer as well. Also as a social event, Professors Gulluoglu and Canturk along with Prof. Dan Hershko, the president of Israeli Society of Breast Surgeons visited Turkish Embassy in Bucharest after the Ambassador’s kind invitation.
The Symposium on “Molecular Oncology in Breast Cancer” which is organized as a joint project by SENATURK and Acibadem University School of Medicine was held in 17 October 2015 in Istanbul. More than 50 physicians from all over Turkey attended the meeting in which 10 guest faculty gave lectures in three sessions. Molecular oncology in healthy women, patients with early as well metatstatic breast cancer were discussed during this one-day symposium.
SENATURK successfully organized its second breast ultrasound course in Istanbul in collaboration with International Breast Ultrasound School (IBUS). 30 physicians from Turkey, Azerbaijan, Latvia, Australia, Iran and United Arab Emirates received their certificates after completing theoretical and hands-on training sessions on three-day programme between 18-20 June 2015.

Istanbul Reconstructive Breast Cancer Surgery (IREBS) 2015 Workshop was held during 9-10 May 2015 in Istanbul with participation of 30 surgeons from Turkey, Greece, Saudia Arabia, Egypt, Morocco, Moldavia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Bulgaria and Romania. All participating surgeons received their certificates after completing 2-day workshop including hands-on training on live and foam models.
SENATURK JOINS EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT’S NEW INITIATION
Prof. Bahadır Güllüoğlu, the president of SENATURK, has recently visited European Parliament in Brussels to join the Partnership on Equity of Access to Quality Healthcare in European Union after receiving an official invitation from the Presidency of EP. This officially named Patient Access Partnership is planned to work as a network aimed at bringing together patients, the health community, health industry and policy-makers to discuss and promote solutions in tackling barriers and inequities in healthcare across Europe. Mr. Andrey Kovatchev who is the Quaestor, member of the Presidency of the EP, with a group of his MEP colleagues initiated the creation of an Interest Group on Access to healthcare in the EP last November. This group is thought to play a major role in providing a platform for discussion and concrete action, in cooperation with patients and the healthcare community. It is also expected to promote synergies and knowledge-sharing regarding disease specific initiatives in the EP relating to access, and other thematic interest groups to ensure maximum effectiveness. SENATURK was represented by Prof. Güllüoğlu at the official launch of the Group on 27 January 2015 in Brussels. “SENATURK is expected to contribute to the objectives of the Group with its extended network, trained human resource and significant expertise. That is why we are very happy to see SENATURK’s representation here at the Parliament today” Mr. Kovatchev said. During the official launch, Mr. Vytenis Andriukaitis, the Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, also underlined the importance of rising the standards of life parameters by increasing the cooperation among all stakeholders. Also MEPs Mrs. Biljana Borzan from Croatia, Mrs. Marian Harkin from Ireland, Ms. Kateřina Konečná from Czech Republic and Mr. Cristian Silviu Buşoi from Romania made short remarks about the Project as the co-chairs of the Group saying that this initiation of the Parliament is a hope for those who really need high standards of healthcare and should be embraced by all state members.To read "Launch of the Interest Group on Patient Access to health care" document, please click here.
With the partnership of SENATURK, Acibadem University and EuropaDonna, International Istanbul Breast Conference Breastanbul 2014 has been held between 30th September and 2nd October 2014 in Hilton Bosphorus Convention and Exhibition Center. More than 600 registrants from 34 countries followed the three day-meeting in which 46 international faculty took part in scientific programme in three parallel sessions. The event was presented and supported by Turkish Basketball Federation and Federation of International Basketball Associations FIBA.
3rd Istanbul Reconstructive Breast Cancer Surgery (IREBS) Workshop will be organized during 9-10th May 2015 in Istanbul. 12 international well-known trainers will be providing a level III two-day hands-on training event on live and foam models. International Breast Ultrasound School (IBUS) and SENATURK organized their first joint breast ultrasound course between 15-17 June 2014 in Istanbul. 39 surgeons, radiologists, radiology technicians and senologists from 13 countries participated 3-day hands-on course under the supervision of 9 international ultrasound experts from Australia, United States of America, Italy, United Kingdom, Germany, Greece and Turkey. European School of Oncology (ESO) gave grants to 7 trainees for the course as its recommended event.
Twenty-four surgeons from 7 different countries have succesfully completed and certified at 2nd Istanbul Reconstructive Breast Cancer Surgery Workshop (IREBS) in 10-11 May 2014 under the auspices of SENATURK Senoloji Akademisi, Royal College of Surgeons London, Association of Breast Surgeons, British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgeons and European Academy of Senology.
Honorary meeting for Prof. Mustafa Dülger withold in Kocaeli with colloboration of EURAMA and SENATURK in November 30, 2013 with great success. The topic of the meeting was"Demanding future of breast cancer management". Almost 150 attendies were at the meeting from all around the Turkey especially from Istanbul and Kocaeli. Also there were foreign attendies from Serbia, Lebinan, Suudi Arabia, France, Germany, Greece and Holland. There were 5 foreign speakers and 5 Turkish speakers.
Level III Masterclass on Oncoplastic Breast Surgery which was organized by SENATURK was held successfully on 7 and 8 June 2013 in Istanbul MARMA Congress Center. Faculty from Royal College of Surgeons of England, British Association of Breast Surgeons and British Association of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons ran the 2-day masterclass. 26 Turkish and one Swiss breast surgeon participated and were certified after completing 15-hour practical modules on oncoplastic surgery skills and breast interventional ultrasonography. Prof. Bahadir M. Gulluoglu, president of SENATURK, has become the member of International Faculty of International Breast Ultrasound School (IBUS) which is the oldest institute on this field since 1991. Prof. Bahadir M. Gulluoglu, president of SENATURK, visited Tbilisi, Georgia on 28 March 2013 as the representative of European School of Oncology (ESO) along with Prof. David Kaladze, Deputy Chairman of Russian Academy of Medical Sciences and Russian Cancer Institute and Mrs. Daniela Mengato, Coordinator of Caspian Region Programmes of ESO. Prof. Gulluoglu, Prof. Kaladze and Mrs. Mengato made contacts with Dr. Rema Gvamichava and Dr. Ioseb Abesadze, executive managers of Tbilisi Cancer Prevention Centers as well as Italian and Czech Republic Diplomatic Envoys to Georgia for organizing in-service training programmes for oncology care services for South Caucasian countries Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan. Czech Development Agency and ESO agreed to start attempts for fund application for a 3-year project starting in February 2014. During their stay in Tbilisi, the ESO delegation including Prof. Gulluoglu had chance to discuss all issues with Hon. Tamara Gvamichava, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, Hon. Federica Favi, Italian Ambassador to Georgia, Mr. Albert Sido, Attache for Development Cooperation, Embassy of the Czech Republic, Dr. Jan Vorisek, Health Care Projects Advisor in Georgia, Czech Development Agency and Ms. Ketevan Egadze, Assistant to Italian Ambassador in Georgia. “I hope this collaboration among Czech, Italian, Georgian and Turkish officials will bring a fresh and effective restoration on oncology health care system in this part of the world which I believe will make these countries and Turkey come close to each other regarding health-related quality” said Prof. Gulluoglu after his observations in Tbilisi.
SENATURK and EURAMA (Euro-Asian Society of Breast Diseases) signed a “Letter of Intent” on 23 November 2012 in Istanbul as they further agreed to collaborate on training, research and quality programs in breast care at both European and Asian countries.
